Know The Impact...

Pharmacogenetics is the combination of pharmacology and genomics. It involves the study of genetic variations that influence an individual’s response to specific drugs. Pharmacology is the part of science that studies how drugs work. Genomics is the study of a person’s genome including the interactions of those genes with each other and with the person’s environment. Just as decision aids now alert prescriber's that the patient takes a supplement that may interact with a prescription, these tests would alert the physician and prescriber that the patient is a poor metabolizer of a particular drug. While one pharmacology treatment approach may work well for one individual, the same approach may not be effective or may cause adverse drug effects in other patients.

Physicians prescription trends as reported in Trends in Molecular Medicine indicates a positive response rate for drug prescriptions at about 50% of the time. The Advanced Genetics Lab PGx program enables medical providers to prescribe the right drug the first time. Our “preemptive” approach to assisting in clinical practices to obtain and document an individual’s genetic markers, is a data source, derived from a once in a lifetime test, to be used by both the patient and their team of medical providers throughout their lifetime .

Informed Decision Making

The implementation of pharmacogenomics helps physicians make informed treatment decisions. This can lead to better patient outcomes by decreasing adverse drug events and by increasing the effectiveness of drugs using data, research, science and the analysis and interpretation of the data by a licensed Healthcare Provider. With the knowledge of a patient's genetic status and the appropriate database, Advanced Genetics Lab can assist physicians to predict patient response to certain drugs and optimize treatment protocols. This ushers in the era of "personalized medicine," where drug combinations and dosages are optimized for each individual's unique genetic makeup.

reducing ade

Adverse Drug Events (ADE) have been linked to one-third of hospital emergency room visits and is a leading cause for hospital admissions (7% annually) thus having a substantial impact on mortality, morbidity and health-care costs. Technology options for implementing a human genome and genome sequence data analysis has improved greatly over the past several years. Thus making access to point of care service support for local providers an option for routine patient care assessments. Advanced Genetics Lab will incorporate medical provider training and education, provide integrated pharmacy support and a secure web-based platform for communicating medical support and test results, thus enabling routine use of pharmacogenetics testing.  Click here to learn more about ADE's.
